Best Scrapbook Supplies – CrafternoonDelights Product Reviews

Crafting and scrapbooking have become a contemporary phenomenon.   Pre-teens, teens, college students, moms and senior citizens have all caught the “crafting bug”!  It is easy to understand, our photographs and memorabilia hold great meaning for us and archiving them in an attractive and easy to share format is what scrapbooking is all about.  But, in order to keep them safe and beautiful for years, the right scrapbook supplies are a must.

On the same note, crafts that we make with our friends and family have that same positive charge and can also be terrific fundraisers for school, religious or social groups.  I helped the students and teachers at an area school create a great craft sale that raised over $700.00 for an area family who had just lost their home to fire.

Some crafting websites are estimating that one out of three households has a crafter or scrapbooker!  If you are just getting into crafting or if you are upping your skill level and want to learn more about the products available, you will want to tune into this website on a regular basis.  As someone who has been creating Art and Crafts for decades, I have tried a lot of materials and know which craft and scrapbook supplies give me the most bang for my buck…and I want you to know too!

As a self-admitted Art and Craft Supply junky, I am always buying and learning to use the latest craft and scrapbook supplies.  When I started CrafternoonDelights it was a vehicle to help my students and their families to invest in the right craft and scrapbook supplies and tools.

I hope the information, ideas and product reviews you find on this site will inspire your creativity, help you stay organized, and save you money.  So first of all, let’s get an understanding of the lingo.

Acid-free, archival-safe, ph negative  or lignin-free:  These phrases or often used interchangeably, but what it means is that the product is free of  the acids or fibers that can cause paper to grow brittle, yellow or weaken.  If a paper product is free of the chemicals or substances that cause deterioration they will not be able to migrate acids to your photos or memorabilia and cause them damage.

Using acid free papers, adhesives, inks and other scrapbook supplies will help your art and craft projects look great year after year.

Deacidification sprays:  These sprays allow you to include non-acid-free paper, such as newspaper or magazine clippings, without future damage.  My favorite is Krylon Make it Acid Free spray, it dries with an undetectable finish and is economical.  This product is flammable and can cause skin irritations, so please read the label carefully and follow the instructions and advice provided by the manufacturer. For me, it is a must in my scrapbook supplies arsenal!

Scrapbook Cases: There are a variety of ways to store your craft and scrapbook supplies, treasured photos, and works in progress.  There are also a variety of kits and cases on the market, but here is one of the places where you want to be very sure of what you are buying.  If your case is not acid-free, it will start to corrupt all your materials.  My favorite, and the one I use for all the CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits, is the Iris Scrapbook Case.  They are made in the USA, are sturdy, acid free, stackable, portable and hold a 12 x12 sheet of scrapbooking paper flat!  The snap lock is easy to use, but holds tight and you can easily transport your craft and scrapbook supplies and finished pieces.  Because they are so sturdy and clear, you can easily stay organized.  I also use them for my student’s projects. Everyone’s work and craft and scrapbook supplies remains safe and in one place, it is easy to handout and put away…a teacher’s dream!  I have tried other cases, but for the money these get my bid every time.

Vinyl: Also note that PVC plastics or polyvinyl chloride is often just referred to as Vinyl. Many sheet protectors, scrapbook cases, photo corners are made of this material.  Vinyl releases hydrogen-chloride gas which over time corrodes paper.   Look for Mylar products when buying sheet protectors or similar products.  They are the contemporary cousin to vinyl and although a little bit more expensive, are well worth the investment.

Chipboard: Another common craft and scrapbook supplies commodity is chipboard.  Most chipboard is made from recycled paper and is acidic.  Either spray it with Krylon’s Make it Acid Free or place an acid free buffer of ph negative paper between the photographs or other precious memorabilia.   All chipboard in the CrafternoonDelights Craft and Scrapbook Supplies Kits are already sprayed so you can use them with confidence.

Photo Safe: Use photo safe pens and markers when writing on photographs or on scrapbook pages.  They don’t smudge, bleed through or otherwise corrupt your image.  Again, the Scrapbook supplies in the  CrafternoonDelights Scrapbook Kits are photo safe.

Magnetic Photo Albums:  Do not…let me say that again…DO NOT use magnetic photo albums.  The pages of magnetic albums are coated with an adhesive that will eventually destroy your photographs.  If you are using magnetic sheets to store images, remove them as soon as possible. Over time, these pages will yellow and often adhere to the page;-(.  Store photos in an acid free container like the Iris Scrapbook Case until you are ready to use them in a project.

If you have old photographs consider investing in a scanner or having them scanned at a photo service.  This way if they are ever destroyed, you can reprint the image.  It may not be the original, but it will keep the image “alive” and safe. Make sure you back-up your hard drive onto an external drive or onto the cloud.

Embellishments: Among the most fun scrapbook supplies are embellishments and decorative items. These should also be as “clean” as you can find.  Usually, these are not a problem, but just remember the tips, we have listed and choose appropriately.

Liquid and Sunlight!  Another storage tip is never expose your craft and scrapbook supplies to water…or coffee or beverages of any sort.  It only take a moment and everything is ruined.  Also, even if using an archival kit, do not store them in direct sunlight or expose to excessive heat or freezing temperatures.  Heat, direct sunlight  or freezing temperatures will cause papers to curl or to otherwise become brittle or distressed.  As they say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”

You will always be able to buy with confidence if you order CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits.  We take Art, Craft and Scrapbook supplies seriously. Your work is important to us.  Whatever your style is, or whatever products you ultimately choose, remember that forever is a long time.  Create works that will bring joy to you, your friends and your family for years to come.

I hope this product review has been helpful.

Origami Paper Craft Kits for Kids – 2 Student Favorites

Origami Paper Craft Kit For KidsIs your child fascinated by the fun and intriguing art of Origami paper crafts?  If so, they are not alone, most kids are. As an Art teacher, I can confidently say that the Origami papercrafts class is one of my student’s favorites!  Actually, when I decided to create CrafternoonDelights as an after-school art and craft class, it was as a venue to allow students to further explore their favorite art and craft projects. Parents started asking me for more ideas and soon I was creating Craft Kits for Kids!

CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits for Kids are also available to you through our on-line Amazon store.

Most CrafternoonDelights projects and Craft Kits for Kids were developed to enhance integrated education.  The Origami projects combine math (fractions and geometry) with  Art and Craft to teach these concepts in a fun and creative way!  Even at an early age you can demonstrate the ideas of fractions, such as, 1/2 +1/2= 1 or 1/4 +1/4=1/2.  Geometry includes an understanding of shapes, such as, a square folded in half becomes two identical rectangles or if folded from point to point becomes two equilateral triangles.  When you demonstrate these concepts through Origami projects your child will visually be able to understand.  Origami also helps your child to focus on instruction and increases manual dexterity.

Art is an excellent way to teach core subjects, because art instruction involves, visual, auditory and kinesthetic methods.  However your child learns, Art can assist in the process and Art makes learning fun!

Traditional Origami paper is colored or patterned on one side and white on the other.  This contrast adds visual interest to the finished pieces.  However, origami can be made with any type of paper. The CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits for Kids-Origami has a variety of paper in a several sizes. All of our Craft Kits for Kids also come in a sturdy and stackable acid free plastic scrapbook case that helps you keep art supplies organized, makes clean-up a breeze and they also travel well!

Let me share a few fun origami projects from our CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits for Kids – Origami.

Many of us remember the Fortune Teller from our own childhood, but here is a tutorial to refresh your memory!

You will need:

  • 1 piece of Origami paper or construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  1. Start by creating a square piece of paper. To do this, fold one corner of the paper over to the adjacent side. To finish creating the square, cut off the rectangle piece.  Now you have a piece of paper that when folded is an isosceles triangle and when open is a square! (Remember what I said earlier about math and art!)
  2. Now fold the two opposite ends of the triangle together, this will form a smaller triangle.
  3. Completely unfold the paper.
  4. Fold the corners into the central point. You will create a smaller square.
  5. Flip the paper over. Again, fold the corners over to the center. You’ll end up with a smaller square.
  6. Fold the square in half. Unfold and fold in half the other way. (Forming to rectangles…more Math!)
  7. Unfold and pull the four outer points together, making a diamond shape.
  8. Pick up each of the four square flaps, and put your fingers inside. Now, you will be able to manipulate the shape opening and closing it.
  9. Write a different color or color each of the four flaps in a different color or pattern.
  10. Flip it over, and write the numbers 1-8 on the triangular flaps.
  11. Write 8 fortunes on the inside the flaps (underneath the numbers). Use the fortunes to praise or teach!  Such as: “You will do a good deed today!”  or “Good fortune follows good deeds”….or perhaps “Practice makes Perfect” or “Kindness will make you many friends. ”  Have fun!

The CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits for Kids – Origami includes paper, pipe cleaners, crayons and scissors…Plus illustrated tutorials on these and many more shapes! You and your child will easily be able to create a fanciful world of fun shapes! Here is another sample lesson:

Origami Butterfly

You will need:

  • Origami or construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers or crayons
  • A pipe cleaner or curling ribbon for antennae
  1. Start by making a square piece of paper. To make a square, fold the corner of a piece of paper over until the side squares up..
  2. To finish making the square, cut off the small rectangle, forming a square. (Which appears as a triangle when folded!
  3. Fold this triangle in half.
  4. Open up this fold. Put the triangle flat on the table with the central fold pointing up (like a tent). Fold one corner over.
  5. Open it up again. Fold the other corner over.
  6. Open it up. You now have a butterfly shape.
  7. Decorate the butterfly.
  8. Attach two antennae made of pipe cleaners or curling ribbon (curled by pulling along a scissors).

Origami shapes can be added to or become thank you cards or invitations.  Origami paper crafts can also be made into a great mobile to hang in your child’s room.  The Craft Kits for Kids – Origami includes many great ideas and all the necessary supplies to make it happen!  Craft Kits for Kids are available in several different great project formats and holiday themes too!

For me, Spring means FLOWERS!  But, alas, growing them takes months…and sometimes years. So while I would encourage you to garden, here are some great floral papercraft project ideas that will bring the fresh look of flowers into your life in just a few hours!

So before we get started, here is a riddle for you:  What do golf balls, tissue paper and floral wire have in common?  Answer:  CrafternoonDelights Spring “Just FORE You Flowers”! Let me explain.  Our Craft Kits for Women include everything you need to create inspired projects….even a golf ball if necessary! If you want to make your life really simple and get your artistic self in high gear, you can order the CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits for Women-Spring Flower Kit here.  They come in a sturdy and stackable acid free scrapbooking box which makes clean up is a breeze, project supplies stay organized and they are easily transportable too!

Still wondering about that riddle answer?  Well, imagine the women who took advantage of our offer and bought a Craft Kits for Women-Spring Projects and when they opened their kit, they found among all the great craft and art supplies a golf ball! That’s right, we include everything you will need!

If you don’t have a kit, gather up colored tissue paper…I love to use shades of teal, fuschia, lime green, and forest green but whatever colors suit your fancy is just fine.  You will also want floral wire, floral tape, a golf ball, ribbon, scissors, pinking shears, glue stick, foam balls, decorative brads, a sturdy stick pin and colored card stock…and if you have an embossing and die cut machine, get that out too!

So let’s get busy. For our first flowers, cut six 8″ x 5″  pieces of tissue paper for each blossom. (You can also make a wavy cut or use a pinking shears for different effects.)  Stack the paper on top of each other.  Starting on the shorter side, accordion fold each sheet.  Fold these in half and tie with floral wire. Now fan the top sheet out  and slightly pull upward.  Continue until your flower is done. If you want, apply a jewel or bead to the center. These are so cute and easy, you will find yourself making these over and over again!

If you have a die cut machine with a floral plate, you can create simple flowers with card stock and a few brads.  Make them full and interesting and wrap floral wire and tape around the folded brad to create stems. (Embossed and die cut paper card stock flowers come in the CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits for Women-Spring Project.   You can also use these flowers to make cards, cover a headband for the little princess in your life, or to decorate anything you want!  (Think refrigerator magnets, mirrors, cards, or place cards for your next party…You are only limited by your imagination!)

Now here is where the golf ball comes in! You will need more 8″ x 5″ pieces of tissue paper, a golf ball and floral wire and floral tape.  Using one piece of tissue paper at a time, place the golf ball a little offside and wrap it around the golf ball like you are wrapping taffy.  Remember to leave a space to pop the ball out! Twist the top (shortest end) tight.  Now twist the bottom end tight and pop out the golf ball.  Make 5 of these for each flower. Arrange your “petals” into a flower shape and holding the longer ends together wrap with floral wire and tape.  You can create a long or short stem using the twisted wire and floral tape.  Continue to make enough flowers for an awesome bouquet!  Place all your Spring flowers in a vase and enjoy!

How We Got Started: CrafternoonDelights – Craft Kits

My name is Helen Grace and I am the founder of CrafternoonDelights and Craft Kits for Women and Craft Kits for Kids. I am also a mother, grandmother, teacher, artist, community leader, life coach, gardener and beachcomber!  Yes…like most women, I wear many hats!

When I was growing up, I was fortunate to have spent a lot of time with my maternal grandparents.   My grandmother was a teacher and my grandfather a contractor who built most of the small town in which they lived. Grandma Helen recognized that I was a kinetic learner and was always devising some project to help me gain greater understanding of whatever I was interested in…or needed help learning.  My Grandpa Jim let my brothers and I build things in the shop, go with him to job sites, and help him in the garden.  It was a hands-on life and it suited me well.

I have always loved learning new skills and creating Art and craft projects. Eventually, my creativity  led me to a BFA in Sculpture, Ceramics and Design. This developed into a very satisfying career as an artist and teacher.

In recent years, my focus has been to help women educate and raise healthy, happy and creative children who learn to dance to their own songs, and follow their hearts and not the crowd.  Crafternoon Delights grew out of that quest.  Parents and coaching clients started asking for ideas to promote learning at home, provide interesting ideas for summer vacations and trips to Grandma’s house. Moms started asking if I knew how to create holiday crafts, handmade cards, scrapbooking techniques and a plethora of other ideas.  Hence, the CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits for Kids and Craft Kits for Women were developed.

The CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits are all packaged in a scrapbooking case that is sturdy, stackable and they travel well too! Each of these craft kits contain all the necessary supplies to complete the projects and easy to follow and illustrated tutorials.  Even if you have never explored Arts and Crafts before the CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits will make you look like a crafting superstar!  Each of our Craft Kits is focused on a particular project, theme or holiday.  Whatever the interest or occasion is, we have craft kits for you!

The Craft Kits  make a great girls night out party too. They are fun…almost addictive!…and everyone goes home with great projects and great ideas.  CrafternoonDelights Craft Kits are great  for school, church or community fund-raisers too.

I know that you, your child and your friends will have as much fun creating with these integrated learning craft kits as I have had with my children, students and friends. Because our Craft Kits contain everything you need to complete the projects, you will find they are great time-savers too.  No running around looking for supplies, books, etc.  Everything you need is in the Craft Kits!

Also, if you run an after-school or daycare program the Craft Kits provide easy instructions and great ideas to keep little hands busy and little hearts happy!  The pride of accomplishment when they complete their projects will bring joy to your heart too.
